KeLa Engineered Fuel is made up of recovered coal fines, recycled binder materials and as an option renewable biomass. The KeLa Fuel pellet is robust and can be handled and stored like coal – with no breakdown or leaching in the presence of water.
The benefits to the user include biomass contained in the fuel pellet, handling ease, low moisture content, higher combustion efficiency, higher hydrogen content, no equipment modifications, and RPS credit eligibility.
Biomass, which can be locally sourced, can be integrated into the pellet at levels up to 50% by weight. The addition of biomass does not affect the handling or water-resistant properties of the fuel. The biomass-integrated pellet can be mixed with coal allowing for efficient biomass co-firing.
KeLa Engineered Fuel with biomass will typically have a heating value 10% higher than coal, less unburned carbon (28% vs. 2%) in the ash, and 10% higher hydrogen content. These properties, combined with the low moisture content, provide the customer with a fuel that delivers more energy per ton compared to the base coal.
